Medea as a Global Icon in the 21st Century”
In 2025/26, the CENES Salon Series returns featuring colleagues from the department, who’ll share their ongoing scholarly and educational research projects.
We start with an Extra-Salon welcoming Prof. Dr. Inge Stephan, Distinguished Emerita of Germanic Studies at Humboldt University Berlin.
Inge Stephan is one of the most eminent and prolific scholars of feminist, gender, queer, and intersectional research relating to German and European literature, theatre, and media. Her initial faculty position was at the University of Hamburg, upon which she held a chair position in Germanic Studies at Humboldt University Berlin for over three decades. She is currently a distinguished emerita located in Hamburg.
Her research presentation in CENES builds on her recent monograph: Medea – Multimediale Karriere einer mythologischen Figur / Medea – Multi-Media Career of a Mythological Figure.

This event will take place on September 18, 12:30 to 13:50 – in person only – in Buchanan Tower 997, 1873 East Mall, UBC-V. This event is free and open to the public.
12:30 to 12:40 – Welcome and brief outline of Gaby Pailer and Jason Lieblang’s SSHRC project on “Women’s Drama and Theatre”, to which Inge Stephan’s Media-article forms an important contribution.
12:40 to 13:50 – Inge Stephan’s presentation entitled “Medea als globale Ikone im 21. Jahrhundert / Medea as a Global Icon in the 21st Century” (presentation in German with English translation projected on screen – discussion in English and German).
