CENES x Totem Park Residence: Speed Language Learning

Calling all First Year Students! Are you ready to embark on a linguistic journey?

To kick off the 2025-26 academic year, the Department of Central, Eastern and Norther European Studies will be making an appearance at Totem Park Student Residence for an exciting event introducing the vibrant language courses offered by the department. UBC CENES offers a wide variety including DanishGerman, SwedishRussian and Ukrainian.

What to expect:

Learn language basics in 15 minutes! Our passionate CENES professors will be conducting 15-minute mini lessons, giving you a glimpse into just some of the languages UBC has to offer. CENES Faculty and upper-year language students will be available to chat if you have questions about language learning and/ or study abroad opportunities.

Language Learning Highlights:

  • UBC is the only university in Canada to offer Danish as a second language. Learn basics introductions and words or sentences related to the Danish phenomenon hygge with Ann-Kathrine Havemose.
  • German Studies faculty will lead students through several vocabulary and sentence forming exercises,
  • As one of the two Swedish programs in Canada, learn more about Swedish grammar, how Scandinavian languages are mutually understandable, and some untranslatable Swedish words with Karin Filipsson.
  • Veta Chitnev introduces students to basic Russian grammar and vocabulary.
  • As of 2023, UBC began offering Ukrainian language courses. Expect to learn language and culture basics with Olena Morozova.
