Join the UBC Ukainian Student Union and CENES’ Dr. Florian Gassner for a lecture on the state formation of USSR in light of the ongoing denial of Holodomor.
Holodomor denial is only partially grounded in the denial of the facts of the matter – the mass starvation that decimated the population of Soviet Ukraine in 1932 and 1933. For those critical of the notion of a Ukrainian genocide, questions of statehood carry just as much and maybe even more weight. In this talk, we will therefore explore how the Soviet Union conceived of statehood and nationality and how this history informs the perception of the Holodomor until today.
