Viking Games Night with Dr. Erin McGuire

DATE
Wednesday October 8, 2025
TIME
5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

Everyone needs to have fun at least some of the time and the people we call Vikings were no exception.

Join us for a games night in Valhǫll! In this workshop, we will explore some of the archaeological evidence for leisure time activities in the Viking Age. Participants will learn a couple of Early Medieval board games as we talk about the kinds of insights games provide into life in the past. We’ll talk about social interactions, learning, and leisure while having fun together.

Participants are encouraged to bring a small object to be their “king” piece for one of the games. Suitable objects might include a LEGO mini-figure, a thimble, a piece from a favourite game, a coin, etc. Ideally, it should be big enough to grab hold of easily but fit within a 1-inch square at the most.

Thank you to our co-sponsors for this event: UBC Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies, UBC Centre for European Studies, UBC Nordic Studies, UBC Modern European Studies, the UBC Pop Culture Cluster, and the UBC Scandinavian and Nordic Student Association.
