Henrik Rehr will present a lecture via Skype entitled "Terrorism and the Graphic Novel."
Henrik Rehr is a prolific Danish cartoon artist and r
ecently awarded author\, known by the general public at home and abroad as
the artist behind children's and newpaper comics like Ferd'nand and Rasmus
Klump ('Petzi')\, and since the 1990s residing in New York.
The body of Henrik's personal work revolves around his efforts to understand the personal motivations of political fana tics after his personal experience of 9/11\, which he experienced\, living with his family just a block away from ground zero.
In the acclaimed graphic novels\, Tuesday and Tribeca Sunset\, Henrik refl ects on reminiscing and coming to terms with the traumatic experience\, ind ividually and collectively. As a comic artist and a Dane in New York\, Henr ik consciously juxtaposes his subjective\, sequential medium (the graphic n ovel) to the generalized narrative of mass media.
Henrik's latest wor k\, Terrorist: Gavrilo Princip\, the assassin who ignited World Wa r I\, takes his perspective back in history to tell the stories from the in dividual perspectives of two men involved in an equally radical event in Eu ropean history\, archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his assass in\, Bosnian separatist Gavrilo Princip. The novel (from 2014) has been tra nslated into 6 languages and recently nominated for the Danish State Radio Literature Award.
Within the context of Danish literature\, Henrik Re hr contributes to the general trend of autobiographical fiction with an ind ividual medium and style\, which has been compared to Art Spiegelmann and J oe Sacco\, and recently reviewed as: the high point\, so far\, in the prese nt golden age of Danish comic art.
