As a department teaching in five languages beyond English, we in the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies (CENES) believe that acknowledging the Indigenous land we live and learn upon is a multilingual responsibility. Our faculty and students have formulated these multilingual versions of UBC’s Indigenous land acknowledgement, and we welcome your feedback.
For those who know or study these languages, and are interested in the various shades of meaning that may differ from language to language, please do read and think these draft versions through. Feel free to share your thoughts and insights, with Department Head Dr. David Gramling, by February 1, 2022, before we move toward a final draft.
UBC Vancouver is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. The land it is situated on has always been a place of learning for the Musqueam, who for millennia have passed on their culture, history, and traditions from one generation to the next on this site.
