CENES Faculty Member Dr. Biz Nijdam Receives PhD Collab Award to Support Arts-Based Research at UBC

CENES is pleased to announce that Dr. Elizabeth “Biz” Nijdam is a faculty lead on one of five teams awarded funding through the 2025–27 G+PS PhD Collab Pilot Program, which supports inter- and transdisciplinary doctoral research at UBC.

Dr. Nijdam leads a cohort of graduate students whose dissertations centre on arts-based, community-engaged research creation, including comics, zines, poetic inquiry, participatory methods, and multimodal storytelling.

Their collaborative project, Arts-Based Interventions in Graduate Research, brings together students from Arts, Education, and the iSchool to co-develop creative research frameworks, produce multimodal dissertation outputs, and build a cross-campus network for arts-based scholarship. Over two years, the team will develop public-facing artifacts, host workshops and symposia, and co-create new models for arts-based doctoral mentorship and knowledge mobilization.

CENES congratulates Dr. Nijdam and the team on this significant achievement.
