The Scanner undergraduate journal publishes first North American edition

On Midsummer’s Day, The Scanner: Undergraduate Journal of Scandinavian and Nordic Studies, peer-reviewed and published at UBC under the division of the Scandinavian and Nordic Student Association published Issue Four, its first North American edition.

Originally an undergraduate journal bound to the student body at UBC, The Scanner has for the first time ever expanded to include academic and photographic submissions from students at various North American universities. Submissions were opened continent-wide with the intention of strengthening Scandinavian and Nordic Studies as a discipline among undergraduate students, and fostering a sense of community among students studying/looking to further their work in the subject outside of Europe, across the pond. With the editing and creation of the journal at UBC, The Scanner seeks to establish UBC, Nordic Studies, and the CENES Department as a major centre for undergraduate research in Scandinavian and Nordic Studies in North America.

The Scanner publishes papers spanning a number of topics and disciplines, from history to literature to anthropology and more so long as they feature a strong focus on Scandinavia, Norden, or diaspora culture. With the new continent-wide expansion of The Scanner, the editorial board is excited for the future of the journal and the discipline, and the part UBC can play in each.

Issue Four of The Scanner can be read on its brand new website. You can also follow The Scanner on their Instagram.
