Dr. Ervin Malakaj (UBC CENES) and collaborator Dr. Jasbir Puar (UBC GRSJ) have been awarded funding in the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Grant Competition.
Drs. Malakaj and Puar secured $297,663 for a 5-year project titled “Queer and Trans Solidarities and the Global Struggle Against Fascism.” The project is related to ongoing work directed by Malakaj and Puar under the auspices of the UBC Queer Trans Centre for Radical Praxis.
The SSHRC project aims to document, amplify, support, connect, and generate queer and trans intellectual and political spaces that are resisting fascism globally. It will systematically establish the centrality of queer and trans perspectives for leftist analyses, advancing the fields of political philosophy and queer/trans studies by positing that it is impossible to study fascism or antifascist movements without including discourses of gender and sexuality as produced by queer/trans researchers and community organizers. At a moment when fascisms are insidiously becoming a part of public political life, there is urgency in demonstrating that queer/trans voices are integral to antifascist thinking.
