Dr. Katherine Bowers publishes piece on Open Access

Dr. Katherine Bowers has published a piece called “The Ins and Outs of Open Access,” which is part of a series on the Public Humanities. Despite being around for several years, Open Access (OA) remains unknown or misunderstood by many scholars and students.

The series, “Going Public: A Guide for Slavists,” was published by the Slavic and East European Journal. According to Dr. Jennifer Wilson at The Ohio State University, “Central to these [public humanities] initiatives is a desire to think about the potential social impact of the humanities. Advocates for public humanities bemoan the current state of academic research, finding it too often cloistered away behind ivy-trimmed gates and prohibitively expensive paywalls, and are proactively thinking about ways to bridge the divide between universities and the public.”

The site also mentions “Crime and Punishment at 150,” the successful initiative that Dr. Bowers co-organized with Dr. Kate Holland of the University of Toronto.
