GERM 304: The Sexual Politics of Weimar Cinema
W2019 Term 2, TuTh 11-12:30
Dr. Ervin Malakaj
This course explores the political, social, and economic realities that shaped the German “Golden Age” of cinema: the Weimar Era (1918-1933). We will watch some of the most iconic alongside lesser-known, yet impactful films from the period. The goal of the course is to examine the formation of the German star system, film fandom cultures, and cinema exhibition practices as these relate to questions of sex, desire, and sexuality.
