About
Dr. Jason Lieblang holds a PhD in Germanic Languages and Literatures from the University of Toronto and teaches across the German Studies undergraduate curriculum in CENES. His interests include curriculum design; emerging technologies in foreign language learning; translation; teaching with and about comics; gender and sexuality in the theatre; the culture of the Weimar Republic; and horror cinema.
Dr. Lieblang has coordinated the CENES Department’s first- and second-year German language levels; has twice facilitated Departmental study abroad programs in Berlin (2012 & 2014); spent two years as faculty in UBC’s Arts One Program (2015-2016); and between 2019 and 2022 collaborated with UBC’s Emerging Media Lab on the development of Chatsim, a virtual reality language learning application.
He is currently collaborating (with Gaby Pailer, CENES) on a new translation of Christa Winsloe’s “Gestern und Heute” (1930); and with Pailer and Annette Bühler-Dietrich (University of Stuttgart) on the project “Women’s Drama and Theatre in German-Speaking Europe, 1620-2020” (supported by a SSHRC Insight Grant 2022-2025). Dr. Lieblang also recently completed (with Matt Tomkinson, UBC Theatre & Film) the first English-language translation of Hans Henny Jahnn’s “Pastor Ephraim Magnus” (1919).
Dr. Lieblang is also the Director of First-Year & Interdisciplinary Programs in the Faculty of Arts (2021-2025). In this role he is responsible for several programs, among them the first-year transition programs Arts One and CAP, and the Interdisciplinary Studies BA.
