Join CENES for a lecture by Dr. Prashan Ranasinghe, visiting scholar from the University of Ottawa.
As boredom is becoming a major source of concern and frustration for many, especially given the pandemic, this talk situates the meaning of boredom to what it means to be human. To that end, focus is cast upon Martin Heidegger’s reading of boredom in The Fundamental Concepts of Metaphysics (1929-1930). Through this text, the relation of humanity and temporality is foregrounded, and Heidegger is reread to shed light on the meaning of existence: what it means to be human, it is claimed, is to be indeterminate and unfinished.
Prashan Ranasinghe is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology, University of Ottawa. While trained in criminology and the sociology law, his research interests have moved into social, political and critical theory as well as philosophy, specifically legal philosophy. His most recent book is The Homelessness of Being: Heidegger and the Meaning of Existence (forthcoming, 2024), which rereads Heidegger’s philosophy of being to shed light on what it means to be human.
