Abstract: Comics about migration are not new. Even Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman began with the flight from Krypton. Over the last half decade, there has been renewed interest in representing migrant experience, namely that of refugees, in comics and graphic novels. In particular, since 2011 and the start of the civil war in Syria, comics and graphic novels have become an essential forum for the representation of global forced migration. This talk examines the power of graphic narrative in recounting refugee experience with particular attention to the capabilities of the comic-book medium as well as to the form’s history of activism and social justice politics.
