On Monday, April 11 Dr. Olga Rosenblum (Departments of Philology and History, Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow) will present “Intelligentsia and Intellectuals, Community and Individuals: The Defence in the Joseph Brodsky Affair and After“, 5pm at the Green College Coach House.  The talk will be followed by a reception. 

Dr. Rosenblum’s visit is co-sponsored by the UBC Eurasian States and Societies: Past and Present lecture series at Green College along with the Liu Institute for Global Issues and the CENES Department.

Abstract

Intelligentsia and Intellectuals, Community and Individuals: The Defence in the Joseph Brodsky Affair and After

This talk will focus on the emergence of “public opinion” around the Joseph Brodsky affair and how and why the intelligentsia defended Brodsky. Moreover, the presentation will compare the Brodsky affair with events involving the intelligentsia’s defence of intellectual freedom in the 1960s and 1970s.
