Call for Applications: UBC Slavic Studies Awards and Scholarships (2024-2025)

Each year, the UBC Slavic Studies program issues awards and scholarships to undergraduate students. These awards were put into place to support students on their Slavic Studies journey.

Awards and scholarships are awarded during the academic year. We invite applications from students for the awards and scholarships listed below. Applications can be submitted using the form below (see bottom of page). Only completed applications will be considered. A completed application is comprised of the following:

  1. A complete information form
  2. A statement of interest expressing the work you have done in your CENS/RUSS/SLAV/UKRN courses, in the UBC Slavic Studies degree programs, or in the community that outlines why you are deserving of recognition. The statement should be no longer than a page (12 pt, Times New Roman, double spaced).
  3. Copy of unofficial UBC transcript (or, if needed, from another institution)

List of Scholarships Available for the 2024-2025 Cycle

  1. Jan J. Solecki Prize in Slavonic Studies: A $2000 prize has been endowed to honour Professor Jan S. Solecki’s contribution to advancing knowledge of Slavonic countries. This award is granted based on the recommendation of the department to a student who has demonstrated exceptional interest in Slavonic Studies.
  2. Nicholas S. Sawchen Undergraduate Award in Slavic Studies: Established through an estate gift from Nicholas Stephen Sawchen, this award provides $20,000 to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts who have excelled in a Slavic culture, language, or literature course and are in good academic standing. Awards are granted based on the recommendation of the department.
  3. Eli and Milica Syeklocha Memorial Scholarship in Slavonic Studies: A $1,550 scholarship has been endowed by their daughter Delfa Syeklocha to honour Eli and Milica Syeklocha. The award is offered to a student in the Russian and Slavic Languages and Literatures on the recommendation of the department.
  4. Stephen and Katherine Kirstiuk Scholarship: In honour of Stephen and Katherine Kirstiuk, a scholarship has been endowed by their family and friends. The scholarship of $2,900 is awarded to a student who has an outstanding interest and academic record in Ukrainian history and language. Should there be no such candidate in a given year, the scholarship may be awarded at the discretion of Russian and Slavic Languages and Literature, within the department, to a student whose interest in Ukrainian Studies is attested by his or her work in a course offered within the area of Russian and Slavic Languages and Literature, and is of high academic quality.

Please note that awards may be divided amongst multiple recipients.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, nominees must meet the following requirements: 1) Course Enrollment: Completed at least one course within the Slavic Program (POLS, RUSS, UKRN, SLAV, CENS) during the 2024 Winter Session (Summer Session courses are not considered). 2) Credit Load: Successfully completed at least 24 percentage-graded credits during the 2024-2025 academic year in any year level in the Faculty of Arts at UBC (BA, BFA, BMS, BMUS, BSW, BA/SCPO, BA/MM). Exceptions apply for students registered with Access and Diversity taking an approved reduced credit load or the minimum credit load required to graduate in Year 4. 3) Academic Standing: Achieved 75% or higher average in 2024-2025W, with no failed courses. Academic records must be complete, with no missing grades or incomplete SDs. Preference will be given to upper-year students and those who have not previously received either of these awards.
