CENS 201 (“Contrasts and Conflicts: The Cultures of Central, Eastern and Northern Europe”) added for Summer 2020 Term 1

Dr. Biz Nijdam will be teaching CENS 201 921 online for Summer 2020 Term 1. Students will examine a variety of media texts thematizing European crisis periods during and after WWII. Looking at representations of the Holocaust, Chernobyl, the refugee crisis, and the COVID-19 global pandemic, students will evaluate these media texts’ historical significance, cultural contexts, political interventions, and visual and narrative strategies. Units will introduce students to the essential theory of one specific medium, but each topic will be approached through a combination of media texts (i.e., comics, film and television, photography, digital and news games, and internet culture).
