Dr. Kyle Frackman has published an article in The Conversation about Coming Out, the 1989 East German film that was the country’s first and last feature film about homosexuality. Thirty-two years after the film’s premiere, which occurred the same night the Berlin Wall fell and East Germany opened its borders, the film still has relevance.
Coming Out has been released this year in a newly restored version with revised English subtitles—all the more reason for new audiences to watch the film and for those who have seen it to get reacquainted with this important part of cinematic and cultural history.
