Dr. Uma Kumar and Dr. Ervin Malakaj were awarded a competitive $48,500 UBC Arts Research Abroad grant. The funding will support instruction as well as student travel costs for a May 2024 Go Global study abroad course titled “Multicultural Vienna.”
The course will be conducted by Dr. Kumar and will explore the history of Viennese multiculturalism through literature, film, and language. It will give students the opportunity to explore the historical shifts in multiculturalism from its Imperial roots to contemporary iterations through individual lessons with on-site experts and guided personal research projects conducted in Viennese cultural institutions.
The course will be taught in German+ and is ideal for students interested in continuing on their language learning and culture studies journey. The only prerequisite for the course is GERN 201/GERM 200 (third semester German). More information on the course will be posted in due time. For any inquiries at this stage, reach out to either Dr. Kumar (uma.kumar@ubc.ca) or Dr. Malakaj (ervin.malakaj@ubc.ca).
