First-year PhD student featured on graduate school website

PhD student Dante Prado was featured in the “Meet our Students” spotlight series on the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.

Dante joined the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies’ Germanic Studies program in September 2022, and is interested in the research topic of laughter amidst wars and crises in German modernism. His Master’s thesis at the University of Calgary focused on the cultural meaning of laughter in Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain (Der Zauberberg, 1924).

“As an undergraduate, many theoretical and scholarly works placed stones, small and big, in me that ultimately created a path into graduate studies as a way to join, expand, shape, and communicate an ongoing discussion on literature, culture, and life. A graduate degree is, then, a way to continue posing questions.”
