The department is sad to announce that our former colleague Maria Fürstenwald passed away on January 14, 2016. Maria was born in Wloclawek, Poland, and immigrated to Canada in 1953. After obtaining an M.A. and PhD from McGill, she became a member of the Department of Germanic Studies at UBC and retired in 1985. She wrote her thesis on funeral orations of the Baroque poet Andreas Gryphius and expanded it in her publication Trauerreden des Barock (Wiesbaden: Steiner, 1973). She will remain best known for her work on women writers of the Baroque period, Schriftstellerinnen, Künstlerinnen und gelehrte Frauen des deutschen Barock: Ein Lexikon (Stuttgart: Metzler, 1984), which she completed together with Jean M. Woods.
