Looking Ahead to 2024-2025 in UBC German Studies: German Program Highlights and Events.

As the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the UBC German Program, I am delighted to share info on our upcoming events for 2024-2025. You’ll be delighted to see some of the integral programming that’s become key to our program’s success over the past few years as well as some new initiatives that we’re excited to introduce to our CENES community.


Imagine Day in CENES

The academic year will kick off with UBC’s annual Imagine Day! Join the UBC German Program for another Haribo Candy Buffet and a Zine Workshop featuring collage-style imaginings of your upcoming year at UBC using magazine direct from Germany!

UBC German Day

German Day is coming back to UBC for it’s second year! Date and location will be announced in the coming weeks.

This event invites local high school students to the UBC Campus to join students in the UBC German program in exploring German language and culture through various activities and presentations. If you’re interested in volunteering, please email ubc.german@ubc.ca.

Kaffeestunde

Join us again for Kaffeestunde from 12:30-2:00 pm on the third Wednesday of each month (Sept 18, Oct 23, Nov 20, Jan 22, Feb 12, Mar 12). Students, faculty, and staff at all stages of their learning journey are welcome for a cup of coffee, snacks, and conversation in both English and German.

Plauder-Treff

UBC Plauder-Treff, previously known as Stammtisch, is a weekly German conversation hour designed to assist German language learners in developing their speaking skills. Join us every Tuesday from 5-6 pm in Term 1 and Term 2 starting on September 10th in the CENES Lounge. Whether you’re a learner or a proficient speaker, all members of the UBC community are welcome to practice speaking German in a casual and relaxed setting. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided.

German Students Association x UBC German Program Events

The UBC German Program is excited to be collaborating with German Students Association (GSA) on a number of events this upcoming academic year:

  • German Games/Spieltisch: Join us on Friday, September 20th at 3 pm in 999A for our first monthly German board games event.
  • German and Austrian Consulate Visits: To be announced
  • Movie Night: Enjoy German films with us once a month at 6 pm in Room 997 (Sept 26, Oct 24, Nov 21, Jan 30, Feb 27, Mar 27). Popcorn will be provided.
  • Baking Night/Holiday Event: Join us for some holiday baking on Dec. 5 from 4-8 pm.

Multilingual Horror Film Festival

Celebrate multilingualism this Halloween season at UBC’s inaugural Multilingual Horror Film Festival from October 27-31! Join language programs from across the Faculty of Arts as they screen their favourite spooky movies from around the world. If you’re interested in volunteering, please email biz.nijdam@ubc.ca.

Undergraduate German Research Showcase

The Undergraduate German Research Showcase has become a cornerstone in the experience of our German Studies students in the Pacific Northwest. A joint initiative with the German programs at the University of Victoria and the University of Washington Seattle, this showcase provides a platform for our students to present their research, fostering a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment. This event, which will be taking place again in spring 2025, highlights the innovative work being done by our students and encouraged cross-institutional dialogue and collaboration. Arts Multilingual Week

Don’t miss Arts Multilingual Week from March 10-14, a celebration of multilingualism and multiculturalism across the Faculty of Arts. In addition to the Multilingual Poetry Slam and the Multilingual Speech Contest, AMW 2025 we hosting a Multilingual Open Mic event for the second year in a row as well as an UBC-wide Undergraduate Research Symposium.
