Job Description
This position is funded by an Arts Undergraduate Research Award and is aimed at students who wish to participate in a research project related to the subject of homosexuality in the former East Germany. As background for a faculty research project, the hired student will compile lists of resources related to the general topic and subtopics. The research assistant will contact archives and libraries to lay groundwork for later in-person research visits by the sponsoring faculty. The student’s duties may include: library and other catalogue searches for research materials; web searches for materials and events; submitting requests for copyright permissions; photocopying and scanning materials; signing out library books and materials; contacting archives and libraries (usually in Germany) to get details of available holdings; and completing other tasks as necessary for completion of research projects. At the conclusion of the position, the student will write a brief report about their experience for the Arts Undergraduate Research program. Work will commence once the budget and hiring paperwork has been completed.

Qualifications
Qualified 3rd- or 4th-year undergraduate students in BA, BFA, and BMus programs may apply. Students in German programs and/or with German proficiency will be preferred, but other students will not be excluded. Required qualifications: valid work visa; strong communication skills; ability to follow directions under faculty supervision and to articulate questions in cases of confusion; high proficiency of working with computer programs like Microsoft Word and Excel. Preferred qualifications: strong knowledge of German language; familiarity with MLA and/or Chicago citation styles; proficiency in library and/or WorldCat catalogue searches; interest in history, gender, race, sexuality, and social justice, or human rights.
