Cultural Sustaining/Kulturelles Nachhalten: Perspectives of the Arts and Humanities
an International Research Collaboration Workshop

April 15, 2019, 1:00-4:30 p.m. (lectures)
April 16, 2019, 9-11:00 a.m. (discussion forum)
Buchanan Tower 997 (1873 East Mall)

Building on previous workshops hosted at UBC in March 2017 and at FUB in August 2018, this workshop will shift the former focus on “cultural heritage” and “sustainability” to the dynamics of “Cultural Sustaining/Kulturelles Nachhalten” in terms of practices and processes, comparing Canadian and German contexts and environments. A curious question will be how and why key notions of the environmental humanities, such as Anthropocene, ecocriticism and eco-feminism, seem to be treated and weighted differently in European and North American scholarship and curricula, especially within the arts and humanities, which needs to be traced further back in terms of the long discourse and media histories of the “nature-culture” divide, and academic concepts of “humanistic inquiry” versus “natural science.”
