Dr. Geoffrey Winthrop-Young has published a paper in Germanic Review (“A Green Hell Makes Better Germans: Stephenson’s ‘Leiningen’ and the Almost Aryan Countertextual Army Ants’) on Carl Stephensons’s tropical potboiler “Leiningen versus the Ants” (1937). One of the most successful German texts of all time, it tells the story of the German emigrant Leiningen who defends his Brazilian plantation against twenty square miles of ravenous army ants.
