The University of Chicago hosted two talks by Dr. Kyle Frackman on East German media on May 7 and 8, 2026.

Dr. Frackman spoke to introduce a screening of the 1989 film Coming Out, the first and last gay-focused film in East Germany. The second talk, “Beyond Coming Out: Queer East German Media and Quiet Revolution,” focused on activism and performance theatre, material from Dr. Frackman’s new book.

The visit was generously sponsored by the University of Chicago’s Department of Germanic Studies, Cinema and Media Studies, Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality, and the DEFA Film Library at UMass Amherst.
