In memory of Professor Emerita and former Department Head, Dr. Marketa Goetz-Stankiewicz, CENES will be offering a new scholarship to students enrolled in CENES language and culture courses.

Starting Summer-Fall 2024, annual scholarships have been made available through an endowment established by the estate of Dr. Marketa Goetz-Stankiewicz (1927–2022) for undergraduate students who have successfully completed at least 12 credits in the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies (CENES) by December 31, 2024. These 12 credits must include at least two courses taught in a language other than English.

The award celebrates emerging speakers of CENES languages, and their multilingual development as thinkers and community-builders. The award is given in honour of Dr. Marketa Goetz-Stankiewicz, a CENES professor who was born into a bilingual Czech-German family and immigrated to Toronto from Czechoslovakia in 1948. She held the position of Head of the Department of Germanic Studies from 1980 to 1985.

Read Marketa’s tribute to learn more about her life, her scholarship and how she, who at one time had been called “the soul of the UBC German Department,” had morphed into an internationally known and much beloved personality who will be missed by many around the world.

How to Apply:

This scholarship is for current UBC students only. Nominees must have completed four courses (12 credits) in the CENES Department as a registered student (not an auditor) by December 31, 2024. Two of the four courses must have been taught in a language other than English (i.e. DANI, GERN, RUSS, POLS, UKRN, SWED, YDSH). Depending on the number of nominations, each award is anticipated to be valued at between $500 and $1500 for each successful awardee.

Students may use this self-nominate form to apply.

Please submit your application no later than 11:59pm on October 26th, 2024.
