CENES Members Attend and Present Research at 2019 German Studies Association Conference



CENES was well represented at the 43rd annual conference of the German Studies Association, which was held in Portland, OR, October 3–6, 2019. They presented papers, organized panels, commentated or moderated panels, or participated in seminars. See below a full list of activities.

Panel Organization

Dr. Ilinca Iurascu and Dr. Ervin Malakaj organized a three-panel series titled “Queerness and Empire, 1871-1918.”

Panel Commentating and Moderating

Dr. Ilinca Iurascu moderated the panel “Fontane at 200 (2): Gender and Rhetoric.”

Dr. Kyle Frackman commentated on the panel “Queer Cultures in the German Democratic Republic.”

Dr. Florian Gassner commentated on the panel “Austrian-Jewish Culture after 1945 (2): Displacement and Identity.”

Dr. Florian Gassner presented a paper with the title “Fatih Akin’s Gegen die Wand: Challenging German Mythologies of Social Work.”

Dr. Markus Hallensleben presented a paper with the title “The Refugee as ‘an Agent, an Activist’: Ilija Trojanow’s Nach der Flucht (2017).”

Dr. Ervin Malakaj presented a paper with the title “Fin-de-Siècle Queer Advocacy and the Exemplary Homosexuality of August von Platen.”

Dr. Elizabeth “Biz” Nijdam presented a paper with the title “Towards a Graphic Historicity: Authenticity and Photography in the German Graphic Novel.”

Ph.D. Candidate Sabine Zimmermann presented a paper with the title “Refuge and Refuse: Narratives of Waste Production in Abbas Khider’s Die Orangen des Präsidenten and Ohrfeige.”
