Dr. Kyle Frackman was interviewed by the Vancouver Sun for a story about the history of Pride on the occasion of Vancouver’s 2023 Pride Festival: “Born from protest, Vancouver’s Pride festival has become ‘a beacon, a lightning rod’.”
“Pride really comes out of a protest. The Stonewall riots in New York City in 1969 were a response to years of harassment, police raids, and entrapment. Demonstrating was to show the presence of a community. It is a way of saying we are not going to accept this anymore. It is a display of pride, but it has always been a day of protest. It has always been controversial,” said Frackman.
