Do you like to sing? Want to take part in an annual tradition within the CENES Nordic community? Then join the UBC Scandinavian and Nordic Student Association (SNSA) Lucia choir!
Hej alle! As the school year begins, so do the preparations for this year’s Lucia choir!
Last year was the UBC SNSA’s biggest Lucia choir with over 20+ students, and now the SNSA is looking to welcome new (and old) faces to participate in this year’s cohort. Let’s make Lucia 2024 bigger and better!
What is Lucia?
Lucia is traditionally celebrated on the 13th of December, which, for Northern Europeans, is when there is very little sun and it is cold and dark. There are Lucia “trains” in schools, churches, retirement homes and many other places, often with children or professional choirs singing. The choir typically enters the room when it is pitch black, and the only light to be seen is from the flames of the Lucia “train.” The ethereal singing of the choir fills the room as they walk in with their gowns and candles and perform a variety of winter themed songs.

The UBC SNSA Lucia choir leads students through rehearsals where everyone will learn songs in Swedish and Danish (with appearances from CENES’ Swedish and Danish lecturers). This event and all of its preparation is also a great way for students to meet new people, dress-up in tinsel and robes, and learn some Danish and Swedish in a fun and low stakes manner.
How to Join
This is an amateur choir, which means there is no experience required in singing, or speaking Swedish or Danish. Just a positive attitude and a love for singing! Students don’t have to be in DANI/NORD/SWED classes to join either, so if you’re interested, the UBC SNSA would love to have you.
Sign ups will be open until September 21st, and can be done using this form. Those who submit will be contacted in a couple of weeks with a schedule of rehearsals. So spread the word, join with a friend, and CENES and the SNSA look forward to seeing you at rehearsal!
