CENES Salon: In Conversation with Thomas Kemple about Max Weber’s “Science as a Vocation”

DATE
Friday November 3, 2023
TIME
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

You are cordially invited to join us for the next meeting of The CENES Salon, an informal gathering of UBC staff, faculty, students, and community members that centres on intellectual exchange and fostering community.

The main focus of this event will be vocation. The German sociologist Max Weber’s essay “Science as a Vocation” has been a cornerstone for intellectual thought in various traditions. It has also been formative for the intellectual trajectory of our own Dr. Thomas Kemple, who recently joined CENES as Professor of German Studies. Kemple will introduce the text and convey his personal history reading it by way of inviting conversation about the text and participants’ personal relationship to it.

The first portion of the Salon will be an informal mix and mingle to get to know colleagues over coffee and tea. This will be followed by a short, 10- to 15-minute presentation, which will then be opened up to discussion with the larger group for the remainder of the time. The CENES Salon is meant to be fun, casual and collaborative – a space to learn from and with each other. You do not need to know anything about the topics to participate. Participants are asked to read Weber’s essay in advance. To get a copy of the essay in German or English, email the co-organizers. In preparation of the event, check out this article on Weber.

Questions? Feel free to reach out to event co-organizers Dr. Ervin Malakaj (ervin.malakaj@ubc.ca) and Hillary Hurst (cenes.adm@ubc.ca).
