Join the Scandinavian and Nordic Student Association (SNSA) to celebrate Lucia on December 7th!
This is a free event, and we welcome everyone to join us.
Lucia is traditionally celebrated on the 13th of December, which, for Northern Europeans, is when there is very little sun and it is cold and dark. There are Lucia “trains” in schools, churches, retirement homes and many other places, often with children or professional choirs singing. The choir typically enters the room when it is pitch black, and the only light you can see is from the flames of the Lucia “train.” The ethereal singing of the choir fills the room as they walk in with their gowns and candles and perform a variety of winter themed songs.
Every year the SNSA rehearses with the Scandinavian Studies Program‘s Swedish and Danish language students to bring you UBC’s own Lucia train. This year we are hosting our event in the Norm Theatre in the UBC Life Building.
The doors will open at 4:30 pm for fika (baked goods and coffee, first come first served), and our choir will begin singing at 5:00 pm.
We will have a box for non-perishable donations at the front door. It is not mandatory to donate, but would be appreciated. Everything will go to the AMS Food Bank to help tackle the rising crisis of food insecurity on campus.
