CENES Professors Attend Virtual MLA Convention



This past weekend (January 7-10, 2021) several CENES professors participated in the annual MLA convention, which was held virtually this year. More details can be found on mla.org.

Dr. Katherine Bowers gave her paper “Dostoevsky’s Gothic Corpse: Writing Fear in The Idiot” on Friday at the session organized by the International Dostoevsky Society. Dr. Bowers also co-organized a session co-sponsored by the International Dostoevsky Society and the Reception Study Society, “Dostoevsky at 200: International Receptions.”

Dr. Kyle Frackman presented his paper, “‘Wider meine Natur’: Early Sexology and the Afterlives of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs,” on Thursday. His session was part of a series on “Queer Print Cultures.”

Dr. David Gramling gave two presentations. His paper, “Building a New Public Idea about Multilingualism,” took place on Sunday on a panel organized on behalf of the ADFL Executive Committee. Dr. Gramling also spoke in the session “Teaching German and Germanic Languages in the Age of White Supremacy,” on Saturday.

Dr. Ervin Malakaj presented his paper, “Monika Treut’s Cinema of Contentment,” on Sunday. His session was part of a series on “Taking Sides.” Dr. Malakaj also presided over the session, “Resisting Securitization and Privatization: Toward New Advocacy Models for Language Learning,” which he co-organized for the ADFL Executive Committee.

Dr. Gaby Pailer gave her paper, “Women Playwrights Between the German Baroque and Early Enlightenment,” on Thursday.
