As 2023 comes to a close, The Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies is taking a look back on this busy year.
We have been welcoming and celebrating all the wonderful opportunities and achievements of our community – from faculty, students, and alumni alike. Together, we have focused on promoting our community’s ingenuity, and looking forward to the future. Here is a brief summary of just some of the amazing things that both the department and its members have accomplished this year.

CENES 2023 Highlights:
- UBC Imagine Day 2023: On September 5, CENES held its first ever CENES Fair, Into the CENEverse! With nearly 400 attendees that included faculty, students, and alumni from CENES and across multiple departments.
- CENES Advisory Council: We know that higher education is rapidly changing before our eyes, and students’ needs are important to CENES. In 2022 the department started the CENES Advisory Council, where students communicate their ideas and practice their engagement with institutional matters.
- Reddit AMA “Ask Me Anything” 2023: In summer 2023, CENES hosted a successful AMA where students can ask all kinds of questions about about what a CENES major can provide, interesting courses, language learning tips, and how European Studies relate to my current time and place.
- Getting ready for the future in Nordic and German studies: Starting in Winter 2023-2024, students in the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies (CENES) will have a more streamlined and intuitive path toward completing a Minor in Nordic Studies and a Major or Minor in German Studies.

German Day 2023: During the first ever UBC German Day in September 2023, high school students were invited onto the UBC campus to learn about CENES and our German program to get a taste of our community-building endeavours and course offerings.
- CENES Salon Series: The CENES Salon is an informal gathering of UBC staff, faculty, students, alumni, and community members that centres on intellectual exchange and fostering community.
- Fisch out of Water: Professor and Department Head David Gramling has started a new series this year,
- CENES x AMNE Festival of Frights: In an effort to promote our folklore and mythological courses, CENES teamed up with AMNE to host our first ever Halloween party, Festival of Frights.
CENES Community Achievements:
- Dr. Ervin Malakaj releases new book
- Kyle Frackman and Florian Faller, lecturer in German studies, selected for the Killam Teaching Prize.
- Drs. David Gramling and Ervin Malakaj co-organize the 2023 DDGC Conference
- Dr. Tim Frandy, new Director of Nordic Studies, presented at MOA’s 2023 Visual + Material Culture Research Seminar Series, and is listed on Smithsonian Magazine’s Best Books of 2022
- Dr. Bożena Karwowska alongside Dasha Prykhodko, lecturer of Russian, and Nina Weng, UBC undergraduate student in History, has received a grant for “Holocausts and the Rise of Antisemitism” Project
CENES Students:
- Modern European Studies (MEST) Major, Melanie Kilchherr, gave 2023 Graduation Address on May 24th
- MA student, Susanna Cassisa awarded Diversity and Inclusion grant and is featured in the Washington Post
- PhD Student Dante Prado publishes article in Monatshefte
- PhD Candidate Ajibola Fabusuyi in Germanic Studies publishes new book and a 2023 Recipient of Diversity and Inclusion Grant of Waterloo Centre for German Studies
- Third-year PhD student, Braden Russell selected to take part in Holocaust Education Seminar
