German Activities at UBC
There are a variety of opportunities to supplement your studies of German language, literature and culture.
UBC Augenblick
Augenblick is UBC’s student-run and faculty-supported undergraduate research journal in German Studies. Launched in 2022, this initiative centers around “Putting German Studies into Action”—a key component of UBC’s German Studies undergraduate curriculum. Students across all disciplines, years, and backgrounds can (and are encouraged to) submit their work – be it an essay, poem, video, song, or graphic novel. For more information about the journal and with instructions on how to get involved, visit the journal’s official website.
UBC Kaffeestunde
Four times each term we gather as a community for an afternoon of tea, coffee, and snacks and conversation in the CENES Lounge (Buchanan Tower 910). During Kaffeestunde, you will be able to meet fellow German Studies students and faculty as you engage in lively conversation. The event is also open to the broader UBC community. Join us! Check out the UBC CENES Events Calendar for more information.
UBC Plauder-Treff (previously Stammtisch)
Looking for a place to practice your German? UBC Plauder-Treff is a weekly German conversation hour created and designed to assist German language learners in the UBC community to develop their speaking skills. Whether you are a beginner or a proficient German speaker, you are welcome. Check out the UBC CENES Events Calendar for more information.
German Students Association
The German Students Association aims to unite people from various backgrounds through creating an environment that stimulates the traditions of German culture. For more information, visit the association’s official AMS page and their Instagram account
UBC Polish Club

Our mandate is to promote Polish tradition, culture, and language through events involving Polish cuisine, film, as well as dialogue, social gatherings, and other activities.
UBC Russian Cultural Community
The UBC Russian Cultural Community is a student-run organization focused on promoting the Russian language and the various cultures of its speakers. Our goal is to make Russian language and culture accessible to all UBC students through social, educational, and language learning events.
UBC Scandinavian and Nordic Student Association (UBC SNSA)
The UBC SNSA is a student club that helps promote the UBC Nordic Studies program and its languages, and to connect students interested in the Nordic region, regardless of language skills or cultural background. They host a series of both academic and social events focused on Scandinavian and Nordic culture, and frequently collaborate with professors in the Nordic Studies program and other clubs on campus to provide the best and most inclusive student experience possible.
UBC Ukrainian Student Union (UBC USU)
UBC Ukrainian Student Union (UBC USU) is a student-led organization dedicated to promoting the Ukrainian community at the Vancouver campus. It is a place where Ukrainian students celebrate their identity and history. By fostering Ukrainian traditions and contemporary culture, we aim to provide a welcoming space to explore and share our backgrounds and interests. With our advocacy and academic-focused initiatives, we strive to inform and hold discussions on the issues and concerns relevant to the Ukrainian community.
